A Growing Crisis for Affordable Housing

A recent RRIO audit has highlighted an alarming trend of disappearing small rental properties in Washington State, disproportionately affecting affordable housing availability and diversity. Driven by regulatory pressures, similar to what lawmakers are trying to enact during the 2025 legislative session, these exits are removing rental units from the market, leaving tenants with fewer affordable options, increased housing instability, and rising rental costs. Without intervention, the housing crisis will worsen, with low- and middle-income households being particularly impacted.

We seek to create an ecosystem where everyone can access affordable homes in their communities by fostering collaboration among developers, policymakers, community members, tenants, and housing providers.

FACILIATING FASTER DEVELOPMENT

Advocating for streamlined policies and reducing permitting delays is crucial for facilitating faster development, while offering incentives to private developers can effectively meet the growing demand for housing.

INCREASING HOUSING SUPPLY

Promoting an increase in housing supply is critical for attaining genuine affordability, as a competitive rental market is crucial for protecting tenants and offering them more options and flexibility. Additionally, a greater availability of rental units incentivizes housing providers to uphold fair pricing and maintain quality living environments.

PROHIBITING PREDATORY RENT INCREASES

Combat predatory rent increases through targeted legislation that addresses the actions of unscrupulous housing providers while safeguarding responsible housing providers. It is essential to adopt a balanced approach that ensures accountability for misbehaving housing providers without undermining ethical housing development.

TENANT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (TAP)

Short-term rental assistance for seniors, fixed-income households, veterans, and others facing acute economic stress. TAP prevents evictions, preserves affordable housing, ensures family stability, and helps prevent homelessness.
